Some dogs leave paw prints on your heart. Dakota left a legacy.
Dakota wasn't just my dog. He was my shadow.
My partner. My co-pilot. My best friend.
For five incredible years, Dakota was by my side through everyday life. Wherever I went, he wasn't far behind.
Then, without warning, everything changed. One Thursday, Dakota was diagnosed with histiocytic sarcoma, an aggressive cancer that disproportionately affects Bernese Mountain Dogs. Eight days later, he was gone. The loss was devastating.
Like many Bernese owners, I had never truly understood how common this disease was within the breed until it became deeply personal. Instead of allowing grief to become the end of Dakota's story, it became the beginning of something much bigger.
I immersed myself. Health testing. Responsible breeding. Pedigrees. Breed preservation. The more I learned, the more I realized that every responsible breeder has an opportunity to improve and preserve the future of this incredible breed.
Dakota's Legacy was born from one simple promise:
